After viewing works and learning about the artists’ stories, instructor Laura Ehrke has created a set of creative writing exercises that will guide you to a better understanding of the relevance of their works.
You will be amazed at the writing that flows from your pen. Not only will you enjoy viewing beautiful works of art from the Impressionism period, you’ll learn techniques to improve your writing while gaining new perspectives on the artists. Bring paper and your favorite pen or pencil to collect your written masterpieces.

Each week, we will look at slides of the featured artist’s work and discuss elements of the artist’s life that may have contributed to his artistry. We try different writing techniques that are inspired by these masterpieces. For instance, we will write a story that takes place in one of Monet’s landscapes. We take into consideration atmospheric effects such as light and fog, as the artist did, and how they may affect the elements of the story. We will also try stream-of-consciousness techniques to quickly sketch a story based on a particular aspect of Impressionism. Students have repeatedly told me how surprised they are to be able to produce the quality of writing that they do. This class offers a bit of escape from hectic everyday lives, to enjoy the beauty of art and to develop writing skills in a pressure-free environment.
